Lazy…Hot…Hungry…(man, no enticement in THAT title)
So, I’m slack and lazy right now, but it has been because of my energies being directed elsewhere. A few summaries of work yet to be done:
- Comments: Corwyn raises some great points, Becky some funny ones. I’ve not said much either way.
- Website updates: I think I’ve been meaning to add a lyrics section for a month.
- Photos: Band/Group photos. We needed some for an interview I think Sarah’s forgotten about. I say Sarah because I think they want to talk to the hot goth girl, not the barbarian smart ass.
And new music…I need to get around to finishing the demo versions of the three new songs, so we can round out the setlist. But on that front, we approved the test masters yesterday. We’re working on some artwork, and then the EP, titled 5 Nocturnes, will be out and available. Maybe even on iTunes. W00t.
But for today, I’d like to steal some ideas from one of the friends on my blog roll, The Phil.
Phil had an interesting exercise on his blog: list 5 albums that you feel are perfect, from start to finish. Now, I can be picky as all kinds of hell, but I thought of more than 5. And just cause I’m all weird like that, I noted that this isn’t necessarily my five FAVORITE albums, but five that I think are un-improvable from start to finish. In other words, my finger stays off the fast forward button.
My list was this:
- The Beatles, With the Beatles
- Slayer, Reign in Blood (basically, if your album is the definitive statement in any genre, you get on my list. See Combat Rock by the Clash)
- King Crimson, The Power to Believe
- John Coltrane, A Love Supreme
- Krystian Zimerman Plays Liszt (Sonata in b minor, other works)
But I think you could EASILY break this down by genre, as there were tons of albums I didn’t name, and a few I don’t like (Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction. Perfect, but not one of my top 100, even).
So, let’s break it down….this is me inviting participation. List your five perfect ones, and if you’re really cool, pick a genre…like jazz, country, prog rock, whatever.
So, get talking, and we’ll have fun with Lists for the next week or so.

Good call. Zimerman struck me–he’d be on my list too.
1. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (on vinyl, not cd–the cd is way overcompressed)
2. Krystian Zimerman – Chopin Ballades, Barcarolle, and Fantasie
3. Iron and Wine – Our Endless Numbered Days
4. Argerich and Dutoit, w/the Montreal S.O. – Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos, nos. 1 and 3, Bartok’s 1st Piano Concerto
5. Herbie Hancock – River: The Joni Letters (w/Wayne Shorter, Luciana Souza, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, Nora Jones, and Corinne Bailey Rae)
.

I’m stunned, K. I’ve only heard of 3 of the disks on your list, and of those, only heard 1. What is Neutral Milk Hotel like?
I’ll have to check some of these out. BTW-You should have new music as soon as this weekend.

I had to narrow it down from a list of 20 to get five albums that I’m comfortable calling “perfect”, but here they are:
1) Prince – Purple Rain : The Soundtrack to the Motion Picture
2) Guns ‘n’ Roses – Appetite For Destruction
3) Meatloaf – Dead Ringer
4) Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin I
5) Metallica – Load
And I’ll pick “instrumental guitar rock” as a genre for $500 and submit the following:
1) Joe Satriani – Surfing With the Alien
2) Steve Vai – Passion & Warfare
3) Jason Becker – Perpetual Burn
4) Guitar Trio – Friday Night In San Francisco
5) Wolf Hoffman – Classical

Awesome lists, Corwyn…I’m puzzled a bit by the Zeppelin and Metallica choices…mostly, I figured you;d like Zep 2 and Ride the Lightning a bit better.
The Guitar rock list is cool, as well…it reminded me how much I love 3 of those albums, and if the Becker and Hoffman can stack up, I’ll need to check those out.
You’re also responsible for the biggest day EVER on this blog.

Okay, since you suggested it, here’s five perfect albums from each GENRE I have in my iTunes. If I haven’t listed 5, it’s because I don’t own enough in that genre to list 5 perfect ones. Let me preface this by saying these aren’t necessarily MY favorites, as with your list, but these are albums I think shouldn’t have a note changed from start to finish (as with your list). Also, all are in no particular order.

4. Bach – Great Organ Works (E. Power Biggs, organ)
5. Holst – The Planets (Dutoit, Montreal Symphony Orchestra)

Comedy:
1. Bill Hicks – Rant in E-Minor

3. The Crystal Method – Vegas
4. Orbital – The Middle of Nowhere
5. Enigma – The Cross of Changes
Folk:
1. Blackmore’s Night – Under a Violet Moon
2. Cry Cry Cry – Cry Cry Cry

4. Craig Chaquico – Once in a Blue Universe
5. Craig Chaquico – A Thousand Pictures (these last two are really “smooth jazz”, but they fit for me)
The rest of the list will follow in a while, because then I’m starting to get into the metal / progressive stuff and I have TONS of that to go through.
cheers,
Phil

Phil,
Awesome comment…I have a few disks to check out, and I have more than a few to recommend for you…especially Mozart! And Bach…Also, some cool electronic stuff like Paul Lansky, Iannis Xenakis, Stockhausen, and a few others. You also got me into the Crystal Method…I love that disk.
I can also think of one Industrial disk you need…Front 242, Front by Front. I think you’ll totally enjoy Welcome to Paradise!
