The Greatest Band Names, Ever

I’ve been mulling this post over for awhile: My favorite band names of all time. Some of them are bands I don’t really like, some are bands that I love, some bands I got into solely because of their name. All of them rock, in my view. These are in no particular order.

Led Zeppelin-the best example of the light/heavy two word dichotmy as a band name. It spawned many imitators. Some of the other bands here have that same content, and I’ll go ahead an give two further examples: Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. METAL!

King Crimson-my all time favorite. My fascination with KC started with their name. How can you not love a band called King Crimson?

Pain of Salvation-band with over three words in their name run a risk; a good band name should be pretty succinct. Note the use of dichotomy.

My Dying Bride-Seriously, is there any doubt of what you’ll get with these guys? They could use a better logo, but I love the name.

Symphony X-damn cool logo, to boot.

Slayer-the best of the one word band names, or at least one of them. Another band name that should make very clear of what you’ll be hearing.

The Black Dahlia Murder-hate the band, love the name.

Miranda Sex Garden/Medieval Baebes: I got into both the Bands because of their name.

And finally, roudning out our list of (slightly more than ) 10, two of our MySpace friends have awesome, awesome band names…

Mary Shelly Overdrive and…

Wait for it…

TITS OF DEATH!

I saw that name, and I was like…I don’t even care what they sould like…I want the Cd…as it happens, TOD is really, really good…hard rock in the Donna’s/Ramones vein.

Comment with some of your favorite band names!

Honorable mentions: Rush, Jane’s Addiction, Dream Theater, The Sins of thy Beloved, Celtic Frost, and Nine Inch Nails.

Links coming later…

And also, because I’m into balance, the WORST band names ever…and man, there are some really, really bad ones out there.

  1. I never even HEARD of a lot of these. Heh…I’m more of a ‘Bill Hayley and the Comets/Buddy Holley and the Crickets’ kind of fan…or maybe I’m just old…

There WAS a comment left here yesterday that started with the phrase “I’d like to volunteer a couple if I may”

Well, no. 1) I have no idea who the fuck you are, which ordinarily would not get your comment deleted, but 2) some quick research revealed that if these are actual band names, they are buried WAAAAAAAAY under the radar and 3) those names suck.

Which is why your comment got deleted. If this hurts your feelings, I’ll buy you a pint and all will be well.
